We are often asked to design a home with an undercroft garage. This can vary from a simple two car garage to a huge six car garage, more akin to an underground carpark.

We generally find that a block which slopes up to the rear is most suitable for this type of configuration. Another advantage is that in the design process we can often cater for extra storage, a wine cellar or even a gym, as once the machinery is on site it is not all that more expensive to extend and excavate farther back into the rear area of the block. Access to the upper floor these days is generally via internal stairs or, if budget permits, via a custom-designed lift which is certainly handy in later years or for transporting heavier items like groceries and suitcases. The good news is that the cost of lifts has fallen dramatically in the past couple of years. This feature adds value to the home and also extends the life of the residence as sometimes people have to sell their home due to them not being able to negotiate the stairs anymore.

An undercroft garage also allows us to utilise the full width of the block in relation to the outlook from more rooms, and we can even provide a balcony as well if views are a consideration.

Street appeal can be enhanced by our designers having a wider frontage to work with due to the garages being located underneath the home. The home will also have a smaller footprint, allowing more room for pools and other outside amenities.

Not having to embed a garage into the front elevation of the home gives our designers more flexibility in terms of room layout and the ability to achieve the right balance and zoning for the home to make it more efficient while satisfying your style preferences.
